Ranking starts with matching search intent — the reason behind a query.
The four types of intent
- Informational — the searcher wants to learn ("how to fix a leaking tap").
- Commercial — they're comparing options ("best project management software").
- Transactional — they're ready to act ("buy running shoes online").
- Navigational — they want a specific site ("gmail login").
How to identify intent
- Look at modifiers: how, what, guide suggest informational; best, vs, review suggest commercial; buy, price, near me suggest transactional.
- Study the current top results — their format (guides, product pages, comparisons) reveals what search engines think users want.
Building the right page
- Informational: comprehensive guides with clear headings and FAQs.
- Commercial: comparisons, pros and cons, honest recommendations.
- Transactional: fast product or service pages with clear calls to action.
Mismatched intent is one of the most common reasons good content fails to rank.
