A technical SEO audit is about one question: can search engines crawl, render and index the pages you care about — and do those pages send the right signals?
1. Crawlability
- Make sure important pages return HTTP 200 and are reachable through internal links.
- Check
robots.txtisn't blocking pages or resources (CSS/JS) needed for rendering. - Keep redirect chains to a single hop and remove redirect loops.
2. Indexability
- Look for accidental
noindextags orX-Robots-Tagheaders. - Every indexable page should have a self-referencing canonical tag.
- Canonicals must point to live, 200-status URLs.
3. On-page signals
- One unique, descriptive title (30–60 characters) per page.
- A compelling meta description (70–160 characters).
- A single H1 and a logical heading hierarchy.
4. Content quality
- Consolidate duplicate and near-duplicate pages.
- Expand thin pages so they fully answer the searcher's intent.
5. Performance and mobile
- Monitor Core Web Vitals (LCP, INP, CLS) with field data where possible.
- Every page needs a responsive viewport meta tag.
How to prioritize
Fix errors first (broken pages, broken internal links, missing titles), then warnings that affect many pages, then notices. Re-crawl after each round to confirm fixes.
